For visitors to Pittsburgh, the Allegheny River merges with the Monongahela and Ohio Rivers just beyond the race finish line. The first battle of the French and Indian War, in which a young George Washington took part, was fought over control of this site. Today the river is used for both recreation and commerce. The race course is lined with the stadiums of the Steelers and Pirates and Point State Park.

Race safety is coordinated by Three Rivers Rowing Association, which is recognized nationally for its safety procedures. The race safety team will be stationed in boats, on the docks and on land throughout the race.
